Universal Input: Delivering Seamless Plug-and-Play Flexibility in Data Centers with Universal Input

Look at the devices on and around your desk. Are the cables and inputs interchangeable between your laptop, printer, smartphone, and backup drive? Chances are, they all have different plugs and inputs and require separate power cords. The same issue arises for data center operators, just on a larger scale.

For data centers operating across various global regions with different power standards, the logistics and planning involved in ordering and stocking rack PDUs for each location can be a hassle. Legrand addresses this concern with the Raritan PX4 Rack PDU's Universal Input (UPDU), which accepts interchangeable input power cords. The UPDU's one-size-fits-all infeed accommodates single-phase and three-phase cord options for the same PDU.

With Universal Input, data center operators can deploy a single PX4 UPDU and, as needed, swap the input cord to match power infeed requirements. The Universal Input's patented plug-and-play Smart Cord functionality auto-recognizes newly seated input cord ratings, accelerating configuration and reducing deployment times.   • Hyperscale deployment: Information about the power available in the cabinet or the plug type isn't always available in advance.   • Enterprise implementation: When deploying large-scale cabinet solutions, it isn't unusual to wait for input power requirements to be confirmed before assembling materials. This may delay a project and its installation, but it doesn't have to be the case with the PX4 PDU's Universal Input. Data center operators and integrators gain the flexibility to preassemble the cabinet with the PDU already installed. Once input power requirements are finalized, simply insert the matching Legrand Universal Input Cord.
  • Colocation tenant billing: Some colocation tenants are billed based on the plug type their equipment uses and the amount of power consumed. This means customers can be charged for power they don't use because of the amperage of the cord provided. Tenants could pay less by swapping in a lower-rated cable, and if they eventually need more power, they can leverage the PX4 PDU's Universal Input to change the cord to match power requirements.

A major advantage of a Raritan PX4 PDU's Universal Input is its ability to easily accommodate varying power configurations, which allows data centers to stock one Universal Input PDU and various single-phase and three-phase Legrand Universal Input Cords, as opposed to having multiple single-phase PDUs with different input cords along with multiple three-phase PDUs with different input cords. This simplifies procurement, inventory, and maintenance.

In addition to enabling easier, faster deployment, the PX4 PDU's Universal Input helps with cable management, thanks to the cord connector's small form factor, which makes it easier to plug the PDU in.
