Raritan Introduces Secure Switch for KVM Access to Government and Military Computers

Posted on March 6, 2018

SOMERSET, N.J. (March 5, 2018) — Raritan® — a brand of Legrand, and a leading provider of intelligent data center management and rack power distribution solutions — today introduced the Raritan Secure Switch that provides a number of security features for accessing computers in government, military, and intelligence agencies. The new KVM switch protects information by managing access and information transfers based on a computer’s security classification level — ranging from top secret to confidential to unclassified. The switch also provides tamper-resistant and intrusion-detection features.

Raritan Secure Switches are certified to meet all the requirements of the National Information Assurance Partnership (NIAP) Protection Profile for Peripheral Sharing Switch Version 3.0 — the latest requirements that U.S. and Canadian government agencies must follow to access classified systems.

Government, military, and intelligence agencies frequently use computers and networks at different classification levels,” says Richard Dominach, Director of KVM Product Management at Raritan. “As a result, agencies require that when a user switches between computer systems at different classification levels that no data is transferred between connected computers. Having undergone lengthy and comprehensive testing in an authorized test lab, our Secure Switches are NIAP Version 3.0 certified and provide the most stringent and up-to-date protections.”

Multi-level physical and logical security defenses

Raritan Secure Switches provide multiple levels of protection as required by the NIAP 3.0 Protection Profile, including:

  • Strict isolation between computers at different classification levels. When secure switching between computers, data is not buffered and cannot leak from one classification level to another.
  • Tamper-resistant features that show visual evidence of physical tampering.
  • Intrusion-detection feature that will disable operations if the Secure Switch’s case is compromised.
  • Firmware is locked down to prevent unauthorized modification.
  • Keyboard data is automatically cleared to prevent transfer or retention.

Switch works in analog or digital video modes with 4K Ultra HD
To support both new and legacy systems at government agencies, the Raritan Secure Switch can connect to computers with either analog (VGA) or digital video (DVI, HDMI) formats — such as 4K Ultra HD, high-definition and standard resolutions. Unlike other secure switches, a single Raritan Secure Switch can work in an analog (VGA) or digital (DVI, HDMI) mode.

Availability
The Raritan Secure Switch — which is available today in North America — comes in models with two and four ports, and with the option of Common Access Card (CAC) authentication. These models support a single DVI-I (digital and analog) and USB user console — with optional audio from the connected computer.
