Employees support ‘Make Recycling Great Again’ for elementary school students and volunteer to landscape residences for special needs families

SOMERSET, N.J. (November 8, 2017) — Employees of Raritan® — a leading provider of intelligent power distribution solutions that help improve energy efficiency in data centers and reduce carbon footprints — supported two community programs in New Jersey in October.

Teaching Green

Employees fully funded materials needed for a new program that teaches sustainability and recycling to students at Central Jersey College Prep, a charter school in Somerset, NJ. As a first step towards becoming a nationally recognized Green School, the school wanted to implement an effective waste management program.

Raritan became involved when grades 3 to 5 teacher Mr. Fatih Cekic was looking to purchase for the school three-stream recycling bins to separate paper, plastic, and trash. Joel Bryan, Raritan’s Director of Global Tech Support, responded to the request by spearheading Raritan’s fund-raising effort.

“Thanks to Raritan’s contribution, our ‘Make Recycling Great Again’ program is helping students understand the value of sustainability efforts and recycling properly,” says Mr. Cekic.  “We hope this knowledge will follow them throughout life.” Adds Bryan: “Students are learning that they can make a difference in protecting the environment.”

By partnering with the U.S. Green Building Council’s Center for Green Schools, Raritan volunteers focused on how water, waste, and energy can reduce the environmental impact of K-12 and higher education buildings throughout North America and help transform them into healthy learning environments.

Planting Green

Tom McCann, Operations Project Manager at Raritan, rallied co-workers to help when he learned that volunteers were needed by Alternatives, Inc. — a non-profit organization that assists individuals with special needs by providing residential opportunities. Alternatives needed landscaping help to ready new residences.

More than 30 Raritan employees raised funds and volunteered over four days to plant trees and shrubs, spread mulch, and install fences at three residential properties in Somerset, NJ.

“It is gratifying to support the great work that Alternatives does and support directly the communities where we live and work,” says McCann.

These initiatives are two of the many projects supported by Legrand’s Better Communities program that is dedicated to supporting employee volunteer and philanthropy efforts.  For more information about Legrand corporate social responsibility programs, visit https://www.legrand.us/aboutus/sustainability/employee-and-community-welfare.aspx
