Raritan Intelligent Infrastructure Solutions Bolster Data Center Performance and Support Digital Transformation

Posted on June 26, 2017

LAS VEGAS (June 26, 2017) — Raritan® — a brand of Legrand, and a leading provider of intelligent data center management and rack power distribution solutions — today announced new features for its Dominion® SX II products at Cisco Live, Cisco’s annual IT and communications conference. The SX II — along with Raritan’s new iX7™ controller-based PX intelligent power distribution units (iPDUs), Intelligent Cabinet prototype, and other solutions — will be showcased at the conference.

As part of Raritan’s intelligent infrastructure portfolio, the products provide full life-cycle cabinet management — including delivering real-time insights into operations, issuing early warnings of potential issues, providing secure access and control capabilities to make repairs and improvements from anywhere, and distributing power optimally and reliably to IT equipment. “We continue to focus on customer needs by enhancing our intelligent portfolio with easy-to-use, responsive tools that improve operations and support next-generation data center platforms,” says David Wood, Raritan Director of Power Solutions.

Organizations that employ smart infrastructures and dynamic infrastructure management solutions experience fewer problems, such as data and physical security breaches, and running out of IP addresses, according to a recent study conducted by global research firm IDC.1

“As data centers will bear the burden of digital transformation initiatives in the coming years, addressing challenges through investment in smarter data center resources — such as intelligent cabinets and DCIM — will be critical to success,” says Jennifer Cooke, IDC research director - Datacenter Management, who spearheaded the special study. (Other findings from “IDC’s Datacenter Facilities Infrastructure Management and Operations Special Study,” sponsored in part by Raritan, can be found on Raritan’s blog.)

Dominion SX II

The Dominion SX II, Raritan’s serial console server, now provides Java-free serial-over-IP access and control to remote serial devices with RJ-45 serial ports — such as routers, switches, blade servers — and Raritan iPDUs. “By eliminating Java software we have improved the SX II’s performance and addressed customer concerns regarding constant Java pop-ups and required updates, and the need to manage incompatible Java versions,” says Richard Dominach, Director of Product Management at Raritan. “Our focus is to deliver solutions that are easy to install, configure, and use.”

With the SX II’s new Java-free Serial Client, users can remotely access and control IT equipment using smartphones and tablets.  Another enhancement, the SX II’s new automatic DTE/DCE detection feature, means no rollover cables are ever required; instead, devices connect to the SX II with low-cost Cat5 cables.

Raritan products in Booth # 2800B:

  • Raritan’s SX II Java-free Serial Client. With the new client, a broad range of IT equipment — including Cisco’s Unified Computing System (UCS) blade servers and Cisco Nexus switches — can also be securely accessed and managed using a smartphone or tablet.
  • Cisco EnergyWise-certified PX iPDU with new iX7 controller.  Useful power and health information — such as a server’s consumption of volts, watts, amps and kilowatt-hours (kWh) — is collected from servers and devices connected to the networked iPDUs.  Also showcased will be the iPDU’s new uptime capabilities — including redundant networking and power sharing — and cost-cutting features, such as expanded iPDU cascading to reduce network implementation costs and costly IP ports and drops.  To take advantage of faster network speeds, Raritan’s new iPDUs support Gigabit Ethernet — an ideal pairing with Cisco Catalyst Gigabit Ethernet Switches.
  • Sensors that plug into the PX iPDU. These sensors provide useful cabinet environmental information by measuring temperature, humidity, static pressure and airflow.
  • Intelligent Cabinet prototype is being shown in Legrand Booth 1329. The prototype can monitor and manage, from anywhere, all the IT and integrated infrastructure elements secured in the cabinet, thereby streamlining work, cutting costs, and shifting the focus from managing many elements to managing only one element — the Cabinet.  The paradigm shift to the cabinet or rack as the standard IT unit to manage is expected to make it easier for those centrally located IT and data center professionals responsible for rollouts and uptime in remote locations.  Raritan and Legrand’s Data Communications Division built the prototype to show customers in order to learn more about their requirements for distributed IT infrastructures.
