Why Residual Current Monitoring Is Essential in Data Centers

Residual and leakage currents in data centers pose significant safety risks to both equipment and employees. These risks can be monitored with Residual Current Monitoring (RCM) technology, which identifies harmful currents before they can cause physical harm or result in downtime.

In traditional data center settings, RCM systems record and monitor individual circuits and power distribution panels. Though effective, this approach lacks the granular, rack-level visibility that today’s high-density, high-availability data centers require. With intelligent power distribution units (PDUs), it’s now possible to obtain rack-level RCM data through embedded RCM sensor technology, which enables the monitoring of electrical faults at the source where IT equipment is powered.

Rack-level RCM enables detection of electrical hazards earlier and more accurately. PDUs with RCM provide precise fault localization. As data centers grow in size and complexity, this feature allows technicians to locate and address electrical safety issues more quickly, reducing the risk of more serious outages or downtime.

Causes of Residual Current

Data centers have complex, high-density power infrastructures that consume a lot of energy, making them particularly vulnerable to residual current risks. The shielded cables commonly used in data centers can cause problems if they are not properly grounded, allowing residual current to spread through cable shielding.

In addition, when insulation faults occur in data centers, the consequences are immediate and costly. As insulation deteriorates and allows unwanted current flow, protective devices may trip, disconnecting equipment and triggering downtime. Overheating and disruptions caused by residual currents may damage servers, networking gear, and storage systems.

These conditions, along with other contributing factors, increase the risk of electrical shock and fire, placing technicians and operators at unnecessary risk of harm. They can also cause downtime that disrupts customer service, impacts operational continuity, and potentially breaches service-level agreements (SLAs). RCM addresses these issues directly, serving as both a preventive maintenance tool and a fire prevention measure.

Why Rack-level RCM Matters

As new equipment and infrastructure are deployed, the risk of improper installation or integration increases. Rack-level RCM provides insurance against these outcomes in the following ways:

  • Eliminating system downtime through continuous operation of servers, IT infrastructure, production machines, and other equipment
  • Enhancing reliability with early detection of potential facility issues for improved overall operational stability
  • Reducing operating costs by optimizing maintenance
  • Providing easy oversight of high-availability power systems
  • Providing early error detection to address issues before failures occur
  • Delivering precise fault localization by identifying specific faulty outlets to minimize troubleshooting
  • Improving fire safety through early detection of critical residual currents

 

Raritan Rack PDUs with RCM

Raritan intelligent rack PDUs feature RCM sensor technology that monitors the residual current in the PDU’s wiring. If a fault is detected, the technology activates a distinct local alarm, issues an alert in the PDU firmware, and displays a local notification on the PDU controller, allowing operators to intervene before an electrical safety issue occurs.

As data centers continue to invest in high-density applications, rack-level protection against residual and leakage current, provided by Raritan’s intelligent PDUs, has never been more critical. Preventing downtime is essential.
