Remote Power Control (RPC)

Remote Power Control

Raritan's Remote Power Control (RPC) units allow IT administrators to remotely power on/off and reboot servers and other network devices. These remote power distribution units (PDUs) work with other Raritan products to provide integrated remote power management.

OVERVIEW

Raritan RPC units can be used in data centers and/or remote offices and work with the following Raritan products:

  • CommandCenter Secure Gateway
  • KVM Switches: Dominion® KX II and Paragon® II
  • Secure Console Server: Dominion SX
  • KVM/Serial Remote Office switch: Dominion KSX

BENEFITS

Features

Benefits

Integrated Power Control

Power control integrated with Paragon II, Dominion SX, Dominion KSX, Dominion KX, Dominion KX II and CommandCenter let administrators respond immediately and securely when rebooting is the only way to restore an unresponsive device. No time is lost performing separate sign-ons, launching separate applications or navigating multiple menus.

Web-based GUI

Web browser-based interfaces enable administrators to securely take action from any location in the world.

SSH/Telnet Access

SSH and Telnet access via Dominion SX for quicker Command Line Interface (CLI) control of RPC units. Enables easier client side scripting for automation of power control and monitoring.

Local and Remote Authentication

Inherits the sophisticated local and remote authentication and authorization mechanisms (LDAP, RADIUS, TACACS+, Active Directory) of Dominion Series, Paragon II and CommandCenter.

Power Monitoring

RPC units help prevent outages with true RMS current and voltage monitoring and reporting power consumption, helping administrators balance electrical loads between circuits.

Overload Alarm

User configurable current threshold provides audible and visual alarm on current overload allowing the user to act immediately to protect potential burnouts and interruption of services.

Receptacle Status LED

Individual LED indicator for each receptacle for quick and easy status on physical access.

Vertical and Horizontal Rack Mount Models

RPC units come in a choice of space-saving form factors for vertical and horizontal rack mounting. 1U and 2U units mount horizontally on standard racks. Zero U units mount vertically on rack frames.

NEMA and IEC Plug Types

The 115 VAC units come with various NEMA twist lock and non-twist lock plug types. The 220 VAC units come with IEC and NEMA twist lock plug types.

Receptacle Status Retention

In the case of a power outage, power is restored only to those receptacles that were on before the outage.

FAQ

How much power does a RPC unit need for itself?
The electrical circuitry inside the RPC uses 8W to operate.

What are the default alarm thresholds for PCR8, PCS12, PCS20 and PCR20?
PCR8 - 12 Amps
PCS12 - 16 Amps
PCS20 - 16 Amps
PCR20 - 16 Amps

How do I protect the unit from high-voltage surges and spikes?
This unit must be properly grounded using the earth ground connection next to the circuit.

Why can't I perform the REBOOT command on outlets that are 'Off'?
The REBOOT command executes in this sequence: power OFF, 20-second wait and power ON again. The REBOOT command can only be performed on outlets that are 'On'.

What happens in case of a power overload?
The circuit breaker automatically trips in the case of power overload. Determine the cause of the tripped circuit breaker, correct the problem, and reset the circuit breaker by depressing the button located on the back panel of the PCR8 and PCR20 units, and on the front panels of the PCS12 and PCS20 units.

Is the unit status still accessible through the EIA-232 port even when a power overload occurs, tripping the circuit breaker?
Yes. Power to the unit (electronics, EIA-232 port, etc.) does not go through the circuit breaker. This circuit is protected by a separate ?Amp hardwired fuse. Hence, even if an overload condition occurs, the Remote Power Control unit status menu is still accessible. Circuit Breaker status is reflected on the Status menu. If the breaker is operating properly, the Outlet Circuit Breaker status will read "Good." When there is a problem with the circuit breaker, or if it is tripped, it will read "Fault."
